"In
Oct. of 2000, I bought a Lab pup from an Oregon kennel. This
dog had little interest in birds & proved to be a marginal retriever. I
gave up on training & placed the dog with friends as a pet. I
had hoped to have a dog ready for the 2001 hunting season. My
wife suggested that I look into a started dog. I contacted Jim
Slack at Trailhead kennels, where I purchased a 2 year old started
dog named Tillie. I hunted ducks & upland game with Tillie
this past season. I have never had a dog that compares with Tillie,
nor can I say that I have hunted with a comparable dog. Tillie
lives in the house with my wife & me. The family have fallen
in love with this dog. Jim has repeated the breeding & my
son-in-law now shares my enthusiasm with a pup from the new litter. In
my opinion, two things are responsible for the greatness of these dogs;
the first is a fantastic blood line & the second is the best trainer
that I have ever met, Jim Slack."

met Jim at Trailhead Retrievers in the Spring of '99, when I took an
8 year old Brittany to him to train. He trained this dog for
me which turned out okay. But as Duck season got closer I figured
a Retriever might be a better dog for the job. So Jim called
and told me about a started male he had. Well, I bought the Bear
in September and we have been together ever since. I have hunted
waterfowl, pheasants, chuckers, completed an AKC Hunt Test and a Bird
Dog Challenge with him. He has always came through in whatever
he has been asked to do and more. I haven't been in love for
30 years. Thanks Doc and Whitley."
